Reports from early users
Early adopters of the iPhone 17 are warning that some models may be particularly prone to scratching. A Bloomberg report noted that display units of the iPhone 17 Pro in Deep Blue and the iPhone Air in Space Black already showed noticeable scuffs and marks. Social media posts have since confirmed these findings, with photos showing scratches from MagSafe charger use and chipped edges around the back camera housing.
Durability tests raise questions
In a recent video, YouTuber JerryRigEverything subjected the iPhone 17 models to tests using razor blades, coins and keys. The iPhone 17 Pro’s back camera housing appeared especially vulnerable, with the anodized aluminum coating showing wear on sharp corners. Additional scratches made on the back of the Deep Blue model were clearly visible but could be wiped away with relative ease.
Material shift may be a factor
Apple’s decision to move from the titanium chassis of the iPhone 16 Pro to aluminum in the iPhone 17 Pro and Air could explain the higher susceptibility to visible marks. Aluminum is more prone to cosmetic wear, especially along edges and corners. While the scratches may look concerning, they are purely cosmetic and do not affect the performance of the devices.
Impact for buyers
Despite the concerns, most iPhone owners use protective cases, which can minimize or eliminate visible scratching. For those who prefer to use their devices without cases, the finish on specific iPhone 17 models and colors may require extra care to maintain appearance.
