Michigan’s largest solar installation goes online

Consumers Energy has begun operating Muskegon Solar, its largest solar power project to date, marking a major step in expanding renewable energy across Michigan. The facility is located at the Muskegon Resource Recovery Center and spans roughly 1,900 acres.

The project has a generation capacity of 250 megawatts, which Consumers Energy says is enough electricity to power around 40,000 homes and businesses across the state.

Jobs, scale and technology

Construction of the Muskegon Solar facility created more than 200 construction jobs, providing a boost to the local economy during the buildout phase.

The site includes more than 550,000 solar panels arranged in approximately 5,200 rows. These panels are mounted on tracking systems that rotate throughout the day to follow the sun’s path, allowing the facility to generate electricity from sunrise to sunset.

Part of a broader clean energy strategy

According to Consumers Energy, Muskegon Solar is currently the largest project in its solar portfolio. The company is also developing and operating other solar installations at Western Michigan University, Grand Valley State University, and in Cadillac.

Beyond solar, the utility continues to invest in a mix of wind power, natural gas generation and battery storage as it works to modernize Michigan’s electric grid and meet long term customer demand.

Local partnerships and future outlook

Consumers Energy highlighted the collaboration with local communities and construction partners as a key factor in the project’s completion. Company leaders emphasized that projects like Muskegon Solar are designed to be reliable and cost effective while supporting Michigan’s transition toward cleaner energy sources.

With Muskegon Solar now operational, Consumers Energy says it will continue expanding renewable energy projects to support homes, businesses and communities throughout the state.
