Apple unveils new AirTag with longer range and louder sound

Expanded findability with Precision Finding

Apple has introduced a new generation of AirTag, enhancing its popular item tracker with a longer finding range, improved Precision Finding and a louder built-in speaker. The updated AirTag continues to integrate with the Find My app, allowing users to locate everyday items such as keys, wallets, backpacks and luggage.

Since its original launch in 2021, AirTag has been widely adopted by users who rely on it to recover lost belongings. Apple says the new version builds on that success by making items easier to locate in both nearby and long-distance scenarios.

New Ultra Wideband chip and Bluetooth upgrades

The latest AirTag is powered by Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, the same technology used in the iPhone 17 lineup and recent Apple Watch models. This enables Precision Finding from up to 50 percent farther away than before, using a combination of visual cues, haptic feedback and audio signals.

An upgraded Bluetooth chip further extends the range at which an AirTag can be detected. For the first time, users can also locate AirTags using Precision Finding directly from compatible Apple Watch models, adding convenience for users on the move.

Louder speaker for easier recovery

Apple has redesigned the AirTag’s internal acoustics, making the speaker 50 percent louder than the previous generation. The increased volume allows users to hear their AirTag from up to twice the distance, helping locate items that may be buried under cushions, hidden in bags or left in another room.

The louder sound works in tandem with a new chime and Precision Finding guidance to speed up the recovery process.

Find My network and item sharing

If an AirTag is out of Bluetooth range, it can still be located through the Find My network, a crowdsourced system that securely leverages nearby Apple devices to relay location information back to the owner.

The new AirTag also supports Share Item Location, an iOS feature that lets users temporarily share an item’s location with trusted third parties such as airlines. Apple says more than 50 airlines now support this feature, helping reduce delayed and permanently lost luggage.

Privacy, security and sustainability

Apple emphasizes that the new AirTag is designed with strong privacy protections. Location data is end-to-end encrypted, not stored on the device itself, and protected by frequently changing Bluetooth identifiers to prevent unwanted tracking.

From an environmental perspective, the AirTag enclosure uses mostly recycled materials, including recycled plastics, rare earth elements and gold. Apple says the new AirTag maintains the same form factor as the original and remains compatible with all existing AirTag accessories.

Pricing and availability

The new AirTag is available now at the same price as the previous generation: $29 for a single AirTag and $99 for a four-pack. Free personalized engraving is available through Apple’s online store and mobile app.
