Futures retreat ahead of pivotal week
U.S. stock futures fell Sunday night as investors prepared for a crucial week featuring heavy corporate earnings and a key Federal Reserve policy meeting.
Dow Jones Industrial Average futures dropped 317 points, or 0.6%, while S&P 500 futures declined 0.8%. Nasdaq-100 futures fell the most, down 1.1%, reflecting pressure on technology shares.
Earnings season intensifies
More than 90 companies in the S&P 500 are scheduled to report quarterly earnings this week, including major names such as Apple, Meta Platforms and Microsoft.
Overall, earnings season has been solid. According to FactSet, 76% of companies that have reported so far have exceeded analyst expectations. The index is also on track to post its tenth consecutive quarter of year-over-year profit growth.
However, strong results have not guaranteed stock gains. Shares of companies such as Intel and Netflix declined despite beating earnings forecasts, highlighting investor sensitivity to guidance and valuation.
Market focus turns to the Federal Reserve
Attention will also be on the Federal Reserve, which is set to announce its first monetary policy decision of the year on Wednesday.
While the central bank is widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged, investors will closely analyze commentary from policymakers for signals on the timing of potential rate cuts later in the year.
Recent volatility weighs on sentiment
Wall Street is coming off a second consecutive weekly decline, with the S&P 500 falling about 0.4% last week. Rising geopolitical tensions had unsettled markets, though some concerns eased after President Donald Trump announced a framework for a deal related to Greenland.
Despite near-term volatility, some strategists remain constructive. Fundstrat’s Tom Lee said he expects earnings growth to accelerate to around 14%, reiterating his preference for sectors such as energy and basic materials, along with large-cap technology and cryptocurrencies.
Outlook remains data-driven
With major earnings reports and central bank guidance ahead, market participants expect continued volatility. Investors are balancing strong corporate fundamentals against uncertainty over interest rates and global geopolitical developments.
