Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka met with Indian President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, reaffirming the strong historical and cultural ties between the two nations. The meeting emphasized shared values, mutual respect, and a commitment to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.

Historic and Cultural Bonds

During the talks, Rabuka conveyed warm greetings from the Fijian Government and people, noting that the visit creates a strategic platform for deeper collaboration. He highlighted Fiji’s decision to legislate Girmit Day as a national public holiday, paying tribute to the Indian diaspora’s contributions to Fiji’s development and celebrating the enduring cultural links between the two countries. India’s relationship with Fiji has been strengthened through historic visits by Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi in 1981 and Narendra Modi in 2014.

Areas of Cooperation

The discussions focused on key areas of mutual interest, including education, healthcare, infrastructure development, and regional cooperation. Both leaders underlined the importance of building partnerships that directly benefit citizens. Rabuka stressed that closer ties with India would support Fiji’s development goals and enhance regional stability.

India’s Commitment to the Pacific

President Murmu reaffirmed India’s dedication to strengthening its partnership with Pacific Island nations, emphasizing Fiji’s special role within that framework. She highlighted India’s readiness to expand collaboration and extend support in development programs that align with Fiji’s priorities. Both leaders expressed confidence that the visit would open new avenues of engagement and practical cooperation.

The meeting between Prime Minister Rabuka and President Murmu reaffirmed the deep-rooted relationship between Fiji and India. By emphasizing shared history, cultural connections, and mutual development goals, both nations signaled a renewed commitment to building a stronger partnership that serves their people and the wider Pacific region.
