Microsoft may be preparing to launch its next-generation Xbox console as early as 2027, according to comments from AMD CEO Lisa Su. The timeline suggests the company is accelerating plans for its future gaming hardware amid evolving strategies around artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and custom silicon.

AMD Confirms Xbox Development Progress

Speaking during AMD’s latest earnings call, Su said Microsoft’s work on a new Xbox console featuring a semi-custom system on a chip from AMD is “progressing well” and is currently aligned with a potential 2027 launch window. While she did not confirm an official release date, the remarks indicate that Microsoft is actively targeting that timeframe.

Su also noted that Valve is preparing to ship its AMD-powered Steam Machine early this year, underscoring AMD’s expanding role in the gaming hardware ecosystem.

Microsoft and AMD Partnership

Microsoft’s long-term collaboration with AMD was publicly reaffirmed in mid-2025, when Xbox president Sarah Bond announced a multi-year partnership covering future Xbox devices. At the time, Bond emphasized a focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning in next-generation games.

She also said Microsoft and AMD would “co-engineer silicon” across multiple form factors, including devices used in the living room and on the go. That statement fueled speculation about future Xbox hardware extending beyond traditional consoles, potentially including handheld systems.

Hybrid Platform Ambitions

Previously leaked documents from the Federal Trade Commission case involving Microsoft revealed plans for a “hybrid game platform.” According to those filings, the next Xbox was envisioned as a system combining local hardware with cloud computing capabilities.

Those same documents suggested a release target of 2028. Whether Microsoft has moved its schedule forward remains unclear, but a 2027 launch would represent an acceleration of earlier plans.

Market Context

The timing may reflect performance considerations. Microsoft’s current Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, released in 2020, have not matched the sales success of the previous Xbox One generation. A refreshed platform could help the company reposition its gaming business amid increasing competition and shifting consumer expectations.

Conclusion

While Microsoft has not formally announced a launch date, comments from AMD’s CEO suggest the company is actively preparing for a next-generation Xbox release in 2027. With a focus on custom silicon, AI-driven gaming, and hybrid cloud integration, the upcoming console could mark a significant evolution in Microsoft’s gaming strategy.
