Qualification requirements remain unchanged

American Airlines said it will keep the spending requirements to earn elite frequent flyer status unchanged for the 2027 qualification year. This marks the third consecutive year the carrier has maintained the same thresholds, as it continues to focus on attracting higher-spending travelers while working to close the profitability gap with industry rivals.

Other major U.S. airlines have taken a similar approach, confirming that elite status thresholds will also remain steady for the 2026 earning year. The move reflects an industry-wide effort to offer predictability to loyal customers after several years of program changes.

Loyalty programs prioritize spending

Airline loyalty programs have increasingly shifted away from distance-based models toward systems that reward customer spending. Elite members receive benefits such as priority boarding, free checked bags, complimentary upgrades to premium cabins and access to airport lounges in exchange for flights, partner activity and co-branded credit card spending.

At American Airlines, Gold status is the entry-level elite tier and is earned at 40,000 loyalty points. Points can be accumulated through flying, partner purchases and eligible credit card activity.

New milestone rewards added

The airline is also introducing additional perks at intermediate milestones between elite tiers. These include food and beverage coupons at the 15,000-point level, as well as digital subscriptions to games, cooking and sports content from major media brands.

Cabin upgrades and credit card updates ahead

American continues to invest in its customer experience by rolling out new aircraft cabins, expanding airport lounges and introducing free in-flight Wi-Fi, a move first announced last year.

The airline did not outline changes to its co-branded credit cards after confirming it will end one of its card partnerships. Further updates to its credit card offerings are expected later this year.
