Should You Share Financial Data With AI?

Artificial intelligence has quickly become a part of everyday life. From ChatGPT to Google Gemini, millions use AI to get advice on personal issues, career planning, and even finances. But with convenience comes risk: what happens if your sensitive financial data ends up exposed in a system breach? Experts caution that while AI can be a valuable tool, consumers must carefully weigh how much information they share—and when.

1. Paid vs. Free Platforms

The first question to ask is whether you’re paying for the AI service. Nathan Evans, cybersecurity professor at the University of Denver, explains that free AI platforms often lack strong guarantees about data usage. For instance, free tiers may allow companies to use your inputs for training or advertising. Paid versions tend to offer stricter privacy protections, but even then, reading the fine print is essential. As Evans warns, “If the product is free, you are likely the product.”

2. How Much Data You Share

Even if you decide to use AI for financial help, limiting the details you provide can reduce risks. David Shapiro, CIO at Lebanon Valley College, suggests stripping sensitive information—such as names, account numbers, or Social Security details—before uploading files. Most platforms process documents temporarily and delete them afterward, but it’s still wise to share only what’s necessary. A tax-related query, for example, may not require your full return, just the relevant sections.

3. Balancing Risk and Modern Convenience

Completely avoiding AI may eventually seem as impractical as refusing to use online banking. Rajiv Kohli, professor at William & Mary, notes that hackers are more likely to target financial platforms than general AI tools, making AI potentially less risky in some contexts. Still, breaches can happen anywhere, and no service is completely secure. Experts recommend using AI with caution, applying common sense, and remembering that anything you share could, in theory, be exposed.

AI can provide powerful insights and financial guidance, but it isn’t without risks. Paying for a platform may improve privacy protections, while limiting the amount of personal data shared offers an extra safeguard. Ultimately, the best approach is to combine human judgment with artificial intelligence—leveraging the benefits of new technology while protecting the information that matters most.
