A New Way to Experience the Web with ChatGPT at Its Core

OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Atlas, a new AI-powered web browser that integrates ChatGPT directly into the browsing experience. Unlike traditional browsers, Atlas is designed to act as an intelligent assistant that understands your goals, remembers your context, and helps you complete tasks seamlessly across the web.

The company describes Atlas as “a true super-assistant that understands your world.” It builds on the success of ChatGPT’s search feature—introduced last year and now one of its most-used tools—by extending its capabilities to every corner of the internet. With Atlas, users no longer need to copy, paste, or switch tabs to get help; ChatGPT is built right into the browsing window.

“AI gives us a rare moment to rethink what it means to use the web,” OpenAI said in its announcement. “A browser built with ChatGPT takes us closer to a world where your assistant not only understands you, but also acts for you.”

Smarter Assistance and Built-In Memory

ChatGPT Atlas introduces browser memories, a feature that allows the assistant to recall context from sites you visit and use that information to provide more relevant help later. For example, users can ask ChatGPT to “find all the job postings I looked at last week” or “summarize the industry trends I was researching yesterday.”

These browser memories are entirely optional and transparent—users can view, archive, or delete them at any time in the settings. Removing browsing history also clears any associated AI memories, giving users complete control over their data.

According to early tester Yogya Kalra, a college student, Atlas transformed the way she studies: “I used to switch between my slides and ChatGPT, taking screenshots just to ask a question. Now ChatGPT instantly understands what I’m looking at, helping me improve my knowledge checks as I go.”

Agent Mode: AI That Takes Action While You Browse

The browser also integrates an upgraded version of agent mode, allowing ChatGPT to perform complex actions in real time. Users can ask it to research topics, summarize reports, book appointments, or plan events—all directly within the browsing environment. The agent uses page context to work faster and more precisely than before.

Agent mode is now available in preview for Plus, Pro, and Business users, and OpenAI says it will continue to expand its functionality in upcoming updates.

Availability and Cross-Platform Rollout

ChatGPT Atlas is launching worldwide today on macOS for Free, Plus, Pro, and Go users. It is also available in beta for Business, Enterprise, and Edu users—if enabled by their organization’s administrator. Versions for Windows, iOS, and Android are currently in development and will be released soon.

Getting started is straightforward. Users can download Atlas at chatgpt.com/atlas, sign in with their ChatGPT account, and import bookmarks, passwords, and browsing history from their existing browser to make the transition seamless.

As OpenAI puts it, ChatGPT Atlas isn’t just a browser—it’s the next step toward a web experience powered by a personal, context-aware AI companion.
