Featherweight Design

Acer has introduced the Swift Air 16, one of the lightest 16-inch laptops ever, unveiled at IFA 2025. Weighing just 2.18 pounds (0.99kg) with an IPS display, or 2.43 pounds (1.1kg) with its optional OLED, it’s lighter than Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Air. Starting at €999, it packs a large screen in a form factor that undercuts competitors like the LG Gram on weight.

Performance and Specs

The laptop runs on AMD Ryzen AI 300-series chips, with options between the Ryzen AI 5 330 and Ryzen AI 7 350. These processors are well-suited for productivity tasks and light gaming, though they fall behind Apple’s M4 chip in performance and efficiency. The Swift Air 16 measures 0.63 inches (15.9mm) thick, slightly bulkier than Apple’s MacBook Air, but still slim for a 16-inch device.

Display and Ports

Buyers can choose between a 1920×1200 IPS display at 60Hz or a 2880×1800 OLED at 120Hz. The port selection includes two USB-C, one USB-A 3.2, a 3.5mm jack, and HDMI. However, the HDMI spec is only 1.4, limiting external monitor support to 4K at 24/30Hz—far behind 2025 standards where 4K/60Hz is expected.

Battery and Design Concerns

With just a 50Wh battery, the Swift Air 16 lags behind competitors. Acer rates it for up to 13 hours of video playback, less than half the battery life of its own Swift 14 AI (27 hours). Another design quirk is its gapless keyboard, which may divide opinions among users. While the device impresses with its portability, these compromises could affect long-term appeal.

Market Impact

Despite its flaws, the Swift Air 16 is a bold entry into the lightweight laptop market. Its ultra-portable design, OLED option, and competitive price make it an intriguing alternative to Apple’s MacBook Air and LG Gram. U.S. availability and pricing remain unconfirmed, but anticipation is high for Acer’s lightest 16-inch laptop yet.
